These Are a Few of My Favorite Things
by Courtney Westfall
December always seem to be filled with a special excitement. Anticipation of great thing coming our way. As we celebrate Advent and the birth of Christ, I am especially aware of the little things in my life that bring great joy.
We all have special things in our lives that hold meaning deeper than anyone could guess just from the casual glance. For me, one of those items is a small white bowl that rests on our bathroom counter. Inside the bowl lie some of my most treasured items and I wanted to share with you “A Few of My Favorite Things.”
- A petit gold ring that has my wedding date stamped on the side. I love everything about this unassuming ring and rarely take it off. But when I do, it sits nestled here in the bowl until I slide it back on my finger.
- A charm with Liam’s birthdate. This is the day I became a mother. The day EVERYTHING CHANGED. I will never be the same after this, because my heart now walks around outside my body.
- A dirty old penny. “Brody Boy” is my middle child. My firecracker who keeps me on my toes and I often have to turn away so he doesn’t see me laughing at his antics. For some reason, Brody has gotten some strange illnesses in his three years. We were in the hospital for a few nervous days in February for a bizarre illness. He bounced back after a few days and was able to walk the halls at the hospital before he was discharged. Before I could stop him, he ran to pick up a penny on the hospital floor. As thoughts of antibiotic-resistant diseases ran through my mind, I saw the penny and thought how lucky I am to be Brody’s mom. I have never loved a penny so much and will keep it as long as I live.
- Little yellow bow. When Emmie was born, they brought her to me with this delicate little bow stuck to her head. And it was official. I am a girl-mom. There is something so different about a little girl. Nail polish. Tutus. Baby dolls. This little girl has brought me so much joy and I will always cherish this tiny bow.
So, what about you? What are some of your favorite things? We would love to see and hear about the special things in your life during this magical time of year. You can post them on our Facebook page or on Instagram with the hashtags #myfavoritethings and #918favoritethings.
